The Benefits of Skin-to-Skin Contact

We've got another great episode for you today featuring Anna Turcotte with Bonsie Baby! Bonsie Baby is a company that has designed clothing that makes it easy to practice skin-to-skin contact with your child. The onesies have a velcro flap that acts as a great reminder to practice skin-to-skin and makes it easy to flip on and off.

Anna is from an entrepreneurial family, so she is always trying to think of gaps in the marketplace. She thought of the idea of Bonsie Baby when having her first child when learning about the importance of skin-to-skin contact. This started to become popular when one day in Bogota, Columbia when a hospital ran out of incubators for premature babies. They decided to try putting the babies on the mother’s chest, and the results they found were outstanding!

Some results they found included:

  • Kept their body warm
  • Stabilized heart rate and breathing rate
  • Increased oxygen levels
  • Absorbed and digested nutrients better
  • Initiated breastfeeding
  • Cried less
  • Experienced lesser pain for newborn medical procedures
  • Helped mom build up milk supply while breastfeeding

She also goes into some amazing studies about the long term benefits skin-to-skin can have on your children as well. Some results they found 10 years later included improved brain functioning, less impulsive behaviors, and a reciprocal relationship with parents. 20 years down the road they found higher education levels, being able to hold jobs for longer periods of time, and less likely to be incarcerated. This bond created from birth helps build a connection between parents and baby right from the start.
