We've got another great episode for you today featuring Alexis Barad-Cutler with the Not Safe for Mom Group! The Not Safe for Mom Group is a community and platform where moms can come together and anonymously talk about the things you really can't say out loud. It's a great way to feel heard and test the waters about topics you aren't sure to bring up in real life.
Being so interested in helping the mom community, we also talked about the importance of middle motherhood. Alexis has two children past the toddler phase, and goes into how everyone loves to talk about pregnancy and postpartum. There are so many books, groups, and support systems you can join while going through this phase in your life. But... then what?
Once you children pass the toddler phase, this support seems to go down. It's almost as if we as people are supposed to be experts in parenting after this phase in their children's life, which isn't the case at all! Once your children reach elementary school and middle school age, they are really learning who they are. They learn about gender identity, learning disabilities, styles, etc. Alexis goes into how so many parents feel alone and don't know who to go to while they're learning alongside their child about their identity. These are common things many families go through, but there seems to be a "silence" in these middle years of children growing up.
Although every new stage brings on challenges, it also brings on new opportunities and joys. Alexis says, “It’s like watching a creature you created turn into a person that you want to hang out with!” As she goes into how much fun it is to watch her kids grow into their own little people. The joys of parenting don't stop once they pass the toddler stage!
