Adoption and Breastfeeding - Yes, it can happen! | Myranda Akin
Today we wanted to reshare one of our most popular episodes with Myranda Akin! She shares her story of adoption and how she induced her lactation in order to breastfeed.
Myranda opens up about her struggles with infertility. She had to do fertility treatments for her daughter, and tried the same thing the second time around. It didn’t work out as they would have opened, so they decided to turn to adoption.
Her ultimate goal was to breastfeed her adoptive son, and she did everything in her power to make that happen. The months prior to her adoption, she took many supplements including goats rue and blessed thistle which help with the lactating process. Once it came down to actually breastfeeding, Myranda expresses that she was only making around half the supply she needed. To make up for this, she uses something called a Supplemental Nursing System, or SNS. This includes a small pouch of breastmilk that she got from the birth mom, and a tube connected that she’s able to latch to her nipple. Then when breastfeeding, she’s getting the nipple stimulation with her breast milk as well as the breast milk in the pouch. It’s a win-win!
She ends her interview spreading the message that you’re doing your best. Sometimes it may not feel good enough, but at the end of the day just remember that you are your baby's world and it’s more than enough for them.
