Top 5 Bonding Tips for Dads

The bond between a mother and her baby is intense. It starts way before the actual birth of the child. The bond is raw and incomparable. It brings on a whole new meaning to the term Mama Bear, but what about Dads? Many new Dads can feel left out on the whole bonding experience. They feel inadequate because they're not needed on demand like a breastfeeding mother is. Breastfeeding is a 24/7 job and it’s more than just feeding your baby- it's a source of comfort for them that is beyond compare. So, when you're staring at your husband in the middle of the night, watching him sleep with his worthless nipples, do know there are many ways he to can bond with your new baby.

SKIN TO SKIN

Skin to skin contact is such a wonderful way for baby to bond with Dad. His temperature, heart, and breathing rates will be more consistent, and his blood sugar more stable. It also allows baby to get familiar with Dad’s scent. Skin to skin is relaxing for both baby and Dad.

TAKE BABY FOR A WALK

Babies love being outside and the fresh air. Try having Dad wear baby in a sling or carrier so they're nice and close. Don't forget to have them dressed for the weather!

BE A PART OF THE BED TIME ROUTINE

A routine is key for getting your little ones to sleep. Try jumping into the routine on a consistent basis. A quick story, lullaby, bath time? Dad should be a presence in your baby’s calming routine.

TAKE THE NIGHT SHIFT

Catch a few extra Zzzz's! If Dad offers to take a night feeding, you can get some much-deserved rest. Plus, he can be your baby’s night time hero.

PLAY TIME

Make sure Dad sets aside time each day to play with your little one.  Make it part of a daily routine of snuggles and fun. This can be family time or a chance for you to get to something you really need! A shower? A load of laundry? A nap?? Go for it!

Whether he’s a new dad or a Veteran dad, it's always good to have some new tips.

Build your skills and build your confidence... you've got this, Dads!
